Winter is a wonderful time to build on your child's writing skills. With colder weather, shorter days and kids inside more often, winter is an excellent time to strengthen writing skills before the summer fun hits.
Building writing skills can be fun and easy. Here are four creative writing activities to help broaden their skills and inspire them to write. We've even included some winter ideas. Be sure to check on grammatical errors when you are done each activity.
1) How to Build a Snowman: This writing prompt helps children build brainstorming skills and become more descriptive and imaginative in their writing. Ask how big the snowman should be or what are the best ways to build it? Make a list of items you will use to make its face, arms, and clothes. What name will you give it?
2) My Favourite Winter Activity Is: This writing activity helps children work on building persuasive writing skills. If your children do not enjoy winter, have them brainstorm ideas why another child might like a winter activity.
3) How is Snow Made - This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to learn research skills around gathering facts and examples to explain their concept or idea. It also builds on science and geography learning about the weather and water cycle.
4) Make an Acrostic Poem - Start by choosing a winter word like snow and write a poem about it. Start each line with a letter from the word "snow."
